What are the benefits of vents?

Ventilation is essential, but ventilation with windows open is less effective, dangerous for those with pets or small children, and uncomfortable due to excessive draughts that chill the indoor air too much.

Types of vents

There are three types of vents, vertical, horizontal and automatic. Each type has its pros and cons – let’s look at them.

Vertical vents

Vertical vents are familiar to many: they are installed vertically across the entire height of the window, usually on the right side of the window. As a standard, these vents have one or two doors, which close very tightly thanks to the gaskets.

Modern vertical vents have an external grille to prevent rain or possible burglary, and are recommended for rooms where active ventilation is required, such as the bedroom or kitchen. Cons – they take up part of the window area and a new frame and window must be ordered to be installed in the place of the former window.

Horizontal vents

Horizontal vents are installed longitudinally across the entire width of the window, between the glazing unit and the upper frame of the window. They are made of aluminium, have a very high air permeability for good ventilation, are adjustable by rod or cord, and some of them have possible ventilation modes. However, horizontal vents require additional exhaust ventilation.

In multi-apartment buildings there is self-propelled ventilation of the common house system and, although air from the outside is brought inside, it circulates poorly inside the apartment. Therefore, such vents are more suitable for individual houses and are not suitable for all glazing widths.

Automatic vents

Automatic vents are the most popular modern ventilation solution for apartments without a heat recovery system. They regulate the flow of air into the room by themselves and have acoustic membranes that stretch or contract under certain conditions, opening or closing the damper to let excess moisture-laden air out.

These vents are installed horizontally in the upper frame of the window and maintain thermal and, in particular, acoustic insulation without the need to modify the window frame or to narrow it.

When building automatic acoustic vents, the airflow needs to be properly routed, i.e. they need to be placed in several different locations, ideally on different sides of the apartment, so that fresh air entering one room can exit in the room on the opposite side.

They also have the added advantage of filters that trap pollen and dust and are suitable for all window profiles. They ensure efficient automatic ventilation in all conditions without the use of electricity.

Installation of vents

The most common type of vents we use in our cases are acoustic automatic vents, but we also build vertical vents and, very rarely, horizontal compact vents.

When installing vents in uPVC windows, the placement and number of vents is important, it is never the case that one vent will provide effective ventilation, usually at least 2 to 4 vents are placed throughout the apartment depending on the layout of the rooms.
